>> good evening. tonight police in prince george's county are investigating a deadly shooting that sources tell wusa 9 happened at the end of a party in landover. debra alfarone has been on the scene all day. >> reporter: over here is mountain of miracle of fire ministries. i spoke to a man inside and he said they have nothing to do with what takes place over here. apparently there are a couple ofparties and events that happened on this space behind. but a police source i talked to said he's not so sure. the day after thanksgiving,

4:50 a.m., that's when police got a call. >> when the officers arrived on the scene, they found an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the body. he was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. >> reporter: who was the man? police haven't said yet. the party still a mystery. we uncovered fliers promoting the party. does the church have a permit to throw the party? hours after the gruesome discovery, we saw the police putting up these signs to keep people off the property. >> reporter: police said there's not much they can share with us at this point but if you know anything, call crime solvers. in landover, debra alfarone, wusa 9. it was a devastating holiday for a baltimore family mourning the loss of airman first class. the body of the 29-year-old was discovered in the water near

feels point yesterday after -- fells point yesterday after he was reported missing last week. andrea mccarron brings us the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: his life ended in the murky waters of baltimore's inner harbor. the 29-year-old could fly jets but he didn't know how to swim. >> my wife is falling apart. i've got another son in florida who i can't talk to. >> reporter: that was his father before his body was discovered thanksgiving day. police told the family there was no evidence of foul play, no signs of trauma to his body. investigators believe he may have simply tripped and fallen into the water. he was last seen alive late friday into early saturday enjoying a night out with several friends at a baltimore bar. at 1:30 saturday morning, his friends headed to another night spot but he decided to go home. he was reported missing

saturday afternoon after he uncharacteristically failed topick up his 4-year-old daughter for visitation. he served in the national guard for two years working full-time at joint base andrews. he never knew that weeks ago the d.c. national guard had selected him as its airman of the year. now, his grieving parents will accept the award next week on their son's behalf. andrea mccarron, wusa 9. >> they will hold a memorial service to honor him on december 8th and his funeral will be held in baltimore. tonight's affordable care act checkup focuses on tomorrow's deadline to get the kips worked out of health care -- kinks worked out of healthcare.gov. the white house says it can now handle 50,000 people at a time, but there are some worries that a surge in customers could just cause more problems. more than a month in and

many americans are still wrestling with whether they should shop the exchanges or stick with their employer's health care coverage. during the opening enrollment season you may have attended a meeting or got a letter outlining your options next year. some people are finding it isn't as easy or cost effective to stick with the employer's plan. paul of the employee benefit research institute says traditionally employers look at health care as a benefit to help keep employees and attract new ones. >> the reality is employers are still wrestling with wanting to offer a good benefits packing cadge to be come pet -- package to be competitive but are being squeezed because of the cost increases. so they're between a rock and a hard place of offering valuable benefits while managing the costs. >> you can see more of what he had to say about the affordable care act on biocentury this week, sunday, 8:30 a.m. right here on wusa 9. a new poll from cnn finds

that a majority of those asked do not think things are going so well in this country. 59% of 834 americans asked, and that is up 9 points from april. the survey also took a closer look at the economy and found 39% of americans still think we're in a downturn, up 6 points from last april. retailers are hoping to give the economy a bit of a boost with black friday sales. then again, this year a lot of rushing to find the best deals came last night. the national retail federation is estimating 140 million americans plan to hit the stores over the long weekend and while we wish we could tell you it was all pleasant and in the spirit of the season, well, you know better. because we're getting all kinds of video into our newsroom today of fights breaking out as people try to get the best deals. police were called to this one at a mall outside of philly

after one shopper broke out a taser. another shopper with a cell phone took the video. we don't know how this started or how it ended or if anybody was even arrested. [ shouting ] >> and you wouldn't call this good behavior either. this was the scene at a wal- mart in elkin, north carolina. wal-mart was also the scene of a brawl in puerto rico. in georgia and california police had to be called when shoppers at wal-mart got out of hand there, too. and in virginia two men were rested after pulling a knife on each other outside of a wal-mart. protesters also turned out at several wal-marts across the country today. they were calling for better pay, fair schedules and affordable health care. but wal-mart's ceo doesn't agree with those claims. >> we pay in the top half of retail. our industry offers the

opportunity for people to enter any life stage from 16 all the way to 76 if they would like to, and then they work hard and canbuild a career. >> bile simon also responded to critics who say wal-mart should have stayed closed on thanksgiving. he says more than 22 million people came in the stores to shop and employees were given holiday pay and did deep discounts on wal-mart products as compensation. another tradition the day after thanksgiving, heading out to get the christmas free. the first family had the tree brought to them. michelle obama welcomed to douglas fir to the executive mansion today. the official white house tree comes from pennsylvania this year. it sure is feeling like the holidays out there, isn't it erica? >> absolutely, leslie. we are seeing another really cold weekend on tap this november has been one of the coldest in about 25 years. so looks like we're going to hold on to that through the

there's some powerful home video after a natural gas pipeline exploded in missouri this morning. no one was injured, but some residents were evacuated just as a precaution. seven buildings on a nearby farm were destroyed and that blast left a decent-sized crater in the ground. you can see it. it took firefighters two hours to put out all the flames. no word on what sparked that explosion. crews off to finish up repairs on a ruptured water main in rockville any moment now. that happened at 9:00 this morning along south lawn lane. only about 44 customers lost their water service, including the nearby rockville ice arena. they believe the cold weather played a role in the break.

the district wants to make sure nothing gets in the way ofstreetcars set to run along h street in northeast. starting monday, if you park outside the white lines or you double-park, you will get a ticket. police have been handing out warnings the last few weeks but the goal is really to get you'll in the right mind set before the streetcars start running next are year. still ahead, fire in the sky. we'll tell you where fire and ice met, up next. yñ

we're back now with a great view of lava spewing from mount aetna in itake la. it -- italy. it was a safe distance from the closest town. snowcapped peaks are pupping up earlier -- popping up earlier in our area this year. resorts are opening at their earlier point in at least 11 years thanks to the recent cold snap. a remarkable turn around from the white tail mountain resort just 70 miles from dew point d.c. >> the last time the white tail mountain resort opened this early, some of these teens were still in diapers.

and some others weren't even born. >> wouldn't you rather be shopping? >> no. >> reporter: which is whyrebecca spits and her family declared this white friday on the mountain instead of black friday at the mall. >> there's nothing better than being out here today. >> the past couple of nights we've had temperatures down in the mid-teens. >> reporter: don mccastle is general manager of the white tail mountain resort where it's the he earliest opening since 2002. >> i'm really excited to be open this early. it looks like in the long range this will stay with us for a while. >> reporter: the resort capitalizes on cold by pumping stunning volumes of water through snow making guns which put a fine mist in the air. >> we can pump about 3 million gallons of water a night. >> reporter: where it flash freezes and falls as snow a few feet away. contrast these resorts with this photo of white tail sister resort liberty mountain taken

at christmas last year and you get why opening early is such a big deal. both for the bottom line and for enthusiastic skiers and snowboarders. >> it's awesome. i wasn't expecting to go snowboarding until maybe a month early. >> reporter: as long as it stays cold they will continue to pump millions of gallons of water uphill to guarantee many more white friedst to come in -- fridays to come in what is a remarkable season. >> white tail and its sister resort liberty mountain will open through sunday afternoon and reopen next weekend for the rest of what they hope will be a long and snowy season. which is music to the ears of any meteorologist who loves snow. >> i'm not a snow lover, but i do love to see some nice snowstorms in the winter on occasion. i don't like to be inundated. >> okay. >> all right. i'm going to be able to keep it clear for you the next several

days. however, it's still going to be cold. we have temperatures remaining below average throughout the entire first alert seven-day forecast. a little warmer toward the end. we'll see that in just a second. we'll start it off with a look at the michael & son live weather cam and the capital. right now it is 37 at reagan national and winds out of the north. but it's not as cold out there as it was yesterday. overnight tonight though with the winds diminishing and clear skies, we are going to have those cold temperatures once again, so if you're getting in on some more of that bargain shopping make sure you're layered up. increasing clouds during the day on saturday. i'll explain why in just a second.it's not going to be as cold on sunday but still below average through the weekend and staying dry through the weekend as well. current temperature is the 36. already at the freezing mark in culpeper and in orange as well. and it's 36 degrees at bwi.

39 in annapolis. on satellite and radar we had a few lake effect snow showers in pennsylvania and new york state today but nothing heading in our direction as far as the weather is concerned. it's going to stay dry. overnight tonight, mostly clear. 20 to 28, some really cold lows for us. but the winds out of the north at only 5 miles per hour. tomorrow morning, just a few clouds, partly sunny skies with temperatures in the 20s and 30s. winds out of the northeast at 5 to 10. as we head into the afternoon, that wind is going to take a little bit more of an easterly component. that will bring in the ocean influence so it will be mostly cloudy by the afternoon. winds out of the northeast at 15 miles per hour. sunday, a little bit mild milder with a high of 49. 47 on monday with more clouds arriving. there's a storm system on the way. looks like most of the energy is going to miss us to the south and in the first alert seven-day forecast, that's the day where we're going to see it on tuesday. a few rain and snow showers
